Fanfiction Archive Navigation and Visualization (FANViz)

2019 – 2021

Fanfiction Archive Navigation and Visualization (FANViz) is a tool which provides fan studies scholars with an accessible way to search and categorize sites which do not have robust native search engines, thus providing scholars a comprehensive data source. Much of fan studies is inherently qualitative due to the enormous effort required to quantify the vast amounts of data each archive contains. While we do not in any way seek to replace or diminish the work of qualitative research in the field, we do believe that quantitative data can only help expand the field.

Dr. Anna Wilson is the project PI; Noah Houghton was the primary developer on the project as an undergraduate intern I supervised over 2019-2020. I acted as a consultant and worked with FASRC to provision and set up the project infrastructure (Docker containers, Elasticsearch, Postgres, distributed computing on FASRC), and maintain the application.
